I've never really paid much attention to my weight and as I got into my 40's, it just got to a point where I was pretty annoyed with where it had gotten to, and for the first time ever I sort of thought about it. I have young kids and I want to be around to see what happens to them and how their lives turn out. What attracted me to it was the sort of data-driven pure accountability, so you get people that would help you through the journey.
The number one most surprising thing about Retrofit has been that it's absolutely not a diet. Even going in, I thought, "Oh, this is going to be like a diet. They're going to tell me what to eat." What instead they did, is they helped me understand the choices I was making and let me pick, and I was still able to have anything I wanted to have. It was just more about moderation and right sizing in the portions and balancing the meal.
Early on, I told all of the advisers I was working with, "I'm a rule-based person." Right? So, if you give me a rule and I commit to that rule, that's what it's going to be. Nobody took advantage of that and said, "You can never eat pizza." Instead, they said, "What do you love?" I said, "Well, I love pizza and I love cheeseburgers." They said, "Well, what do you think about maybe only having that once every two weeks, each of those things?" I said, "That sounds pretty easy."
For me it's, to not be able to do it at all is hard, but to have a rule that limits it was really easy for me to follow. So, computer science major, investor, technologist, I needed rules and they helped me with that and they customized it for that and it worked great.
I've lost right around 30 pounds and 15% would be I think 31. So, right in there and I'm hearing from my team at Retrofit and they're cheering me on through the last bit. But it is definitely the hardest part. I think the first ten or 15 are pretty easy compared to the last one or two.
It's funny because you go through this change and I don't perceive it in myself that much. But people that I haven't seen for six months walk up and say, "Wow, where's the rest of you?" It's like a joke. They're just sort of amazed by it.
There is an esteem thing that comes with it. You just kind of feel better every day. My wife looks at me and says, "Damn, you look good," and that feels good. I was on a blood pressure medication that I just sort of stopped taking and as I do my blood pressure, that's just gone. It's not a problem anymore.
So, if you're like me and you're on planes all the time and a different city every week and you're on the go and you have a busy schedule and you don't know you're going to fit this into your life, I would say go for it. Retrofit will help you fit it into your life. The people are amazing. They give you great advice. They customize it, tailor it, and it doesn't matter how busy you are, you can find time to do this for yourself and it really works.
