Hi my name is Jennifer Plotnek, and I'm the lead behavior coach for Retrofit. I want to talk with you today about a sensitive topic and that is how do you have a discussion with a family member or friend who needs to lose weight.
Obviously, this can be a very challenging conversation to have. It is really important to take a very personal and honest approach.
For example, if you are talking with your spouse, you might want to begin by telling them how much you love them and worry about them and their health and their wellness and that you want them to be around to be able to play with their grandchildren or children.
Or you want to like to see them have more energy or be able to sleep better at night. This might be an easier way for a person to hear this information without taking offense to it.
You can also let your spouse or your loved know that you'll be there to support them in every step of the process. However, it is important to always remember that you should ask them how you could be useful to them. The control needs to be in their hands. You can also suggest different ways that you think you might be helpful, but the bottom line is they need to want to have your help. The most important thing to communicate to your family member or friend who's trying to lose weight is the fact that you love them, you care and are here for them.
