James: Part of the problem in the commercial weight-loss industry is everything is focused in the short term, but that's what people think they want.
Brad: Commercial weight loss programs are typically going to have some sort of magical combination of foods or some sort of program that after six months or so you're going to be at goal. It's true that may work, however what we are interested in is teaching people foundational skills that they could use for a lifetime.
Holly: Losing weight is really pretty easy, it's really the maintaining it long-term that's the hard part, and sometimes the strategies that you use to lose weight aren't exactly the best strategies for maintaining that weight loss over a period of time. So, you really need a program that's going to deal with both because the strategies and tools you use are going to change.
James: We have two-thirds of Americans who are overweight or obese.
Jeff: There are so many people that have dieted for years and to an endless string of failures.
Norman: I'll go up. I'll lose weight, go back down, and then after a while I would creep back up. I was at the stage where I was at one of the peaks in this ebb and flow and I heard about Retrofit.
Melissa: That's why this program is so important to teach you how to keep the weight off.
Maureen: Retrofit is not a diet. It's a permanent behavior modification. Our mission is to free that healthy person within.
Matt: Retrofit works because you're given the tools and the strategies that you need to sustain a lifestyle.
Robert: It turns out that 10% is just about in that right niche, where you're going to be able to see and feel the benefits, and it's practical and achievable to sustain that amount of body weight.
Dawn: When you lose 10% of your body weight it's called "clinically significant". What that means is it decreases disease risk of so many diseases. So, you have lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer.
Brad: ...decreases in blood pressure, decreases in cholesterol...
Dawn: ...better sleep, more energy, and just feeling better.
Whitney: [week 19] Today, I hit 10%, and essentially it's been my goal. It's been the hump that I've been trying to get over, so it's exciting. [week 46] I've lost 34 pounds, which is 18% of my body weight since I started with Retrofit.
Brad: Retrofit is a nice combination between high-tech and high-touch. We have some devices that the clients will use that will help keep them on track and more countable. We think that really helps them to do better and helps us keep a better eye on what they're doing. But at the same time, they're going to have a very intimate relationship with their provider so that we can really meet their needs in a comprehensive way.
Melissa: The data from the wireless scale and from the activity tracker is really helpful.
Cathy: The data is so cool. It's such a little window into how everybody is progressing.
Whitney: The Retrofit client dashboard is so unique in that it holds so many different data points and pieces of information.
Holly: But then you actually have that data going to experts, experts that know what to do with it. So they can tell you do you need to stay the course, do you change something, what do you do with that data what once you have it?
Whitney: Every client has access to a team of experts, so a registered dietitian, a behavior coach, an exercise physiologist, as well as a program advisor to kind of keep things on track.
Juan: Most weight loss programs focus on one of the three legs that Retrofit focuses on. So, they either focus on diet, they focus on exercise, or, and to a much lesser degree, they focus on behavioral change. With Retrofit it's all three.
Matt: You feel that everybody in the company is really pulling for the client.
Whitney: This Program works because you have a team of people looking at your individual lifestyle.
Cathy: Do do you need the drill sergeant approach? Do you need a supportive friend? What do you need?
Whitney: We can't tell you up front what your program is going to look like. We craft that program with you as we get to know you through all the data we're pulling in about you to really determine how you will be successful moving forward.
Scott: [week 1] I see it as really being a team effort, where different experts help you think about things in a different way. I like the one on one attention and connection that the video conference allows. My biggest motivation for losing weight is a kind of overall health issue. I'm getting older, my kids are getting older, and I want to be around for a long time. So, I thought it was time to step up and take the steps. [week 23] I've been in the program for 23 weeks. I've lost 38 pounds, which is about 15%. I was getting to a certain point in my life and age-wise that I know I needed to make some changes for my overall health.
Kilby: [week 3] Well, I definitely want to be around for my daughters later on in life, walk them down the aisle. But right now is really about being able to play and engage with them. They have so much energy. [week 30] Well, this year as part of our health insurance, we had to do a screening. I tell you, when I got my results back I was really pumped. My blood pressure was back to normal, my cholesterol was perfect, and there's still an amount weight that I lost, so it was a pretty good feeling.
Juan: My doctor pointed out the dramatic improvement in my total cholesterol was not just a result of weight loss. That was certainly a component. But more importantly, it was the result of my lifestyle change.
Kilby: Week 30 in the program, and I lost 25 pounds.
Whitney: Our client outcomes are, at the end of the day, the only thing that makes us successful. It's the only thing that matters, and everyone in the company from the CEO to the development team and everyone in between, knows that. So, anything any of us can do to make a client more successful happens.
Amy: [week 3] If you could tell me a year from now that I had peace of mind on this and I was in control, it's worth more money than I have. [week 30] I've been on the program 30 weeks and I've lost about 15.6% of my body weight, and it's 30.2 pounds as of this morning.
Mia: It really is empowering in the sense that I'm not doing this to look good. I'm doing this to feel good.
Amy: You as a person, as a participant have to decide that you're going to put the work in, as there is no magic bullet. But I am super busy and I'm making it fit, and it's fitting in.
Maureen: Dr. Kushner's profile, his lifestyle patterns inventory enables clients to see where they're failing in their weight loss. What is preventing them from losing weight? What is preventing them from maintaining their weight?
Robert: When the counselor knows my unique lifestyle patterns that are problematic for me in controlling my body weight they're able to tackle that immediately. They can work on solutions from day one to help you control your body weight.
Maureen: We have over 90% success rate. Less than 5% have dropped out.
Whitney: Even the clients who have been in the program for six months, or 24 full weeks, are still losing about a pound of weight loss per week. So we're really encouraged by the statistics that we're seeing, and just the level of success that we've achieved so far.
Matt: Retrofit works because you're given the tools and the strategies you need to sustain a lifestyle.
Amy: It's like a Master's program. It's just teaching me how to live my life. I feel like I have guardrails around me of people watching and tools that I can use to sort of get me where I need to go from a health and wellness standpoint.
Paula: My rings are starting to fall off my fingers. My clothes are fitting better. It's just been all the way around every day there's something new that I feel good about.
Scott: One of the great strengths about the Retrofit program is how personal it is. Working with my behavior coach it was about understanding how the Retrofit program would complement what I'm trying to do in my life and not necessarily forcing me to change everything about my life to fit the Retrofit program.
Juan: My lifestyle, my issues, not somebody else's and the proof is in the pudding in terms of the effectiveness of the program.
Matt: Retrofit is the way weight loss should be.
Norman: The expert team is motivating, and knowing that they're there looking over everything adds to that motivation. I want to succeed. I know they want me to succeed. I have succeeded and I'll continue to succeed.
Paula: It is a phenomenal program. There's no reason that you can't succeed. It's definitely a win-win situation. For your own life and health, I can't encourage you enough to do it. Just do it. Don't even think about it, just do it.
