What is Retrofit?: Retrofit Weight Loss: Information for Doctors, Clinic Managers & Physicians' Assistants
If you are overweight or obese, losing weight is well known to improve a myriad of health conditions. The Retrofit Advisory Board of Robert Kushner, MD, James Hill, PhD, Holly Wyatt, MD, Brad Saks, PsyD, Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, and Melissa Paolino, ACSM-CES, as well as Retrofit clients and employees discuss the slow and steady approach of Retrofit Weight Loss.

James: We have two-thirds of Americans, who are overweight or obese, and a lot of those people want to lose weight, and they want to lose a lot of weight.
Holly: The more weight you lose, then you have the potential for more weight to regain.
Matt: People will try to lose weight. They'll get started in a program, and they'll lose their weight pretty quickly. It'll drop like a stone oftentimes, but they gain it back and then some.
Jeff: There are so many people that have dieted for years, and to an endless string of failures. For the first time, they tell us they actually feel like this is the time they can keep the weight off for good.
James: We think a realistic goal to start with is 10%. The impact of 10% on an individual is important, but the impact of 10% on a population would just be tremendous.
Melissa: That's why this program is so important to teach you how to keep the weight off.
Brad: We feel we have an impact on the overall obesity crisis in the sense that our focus is really on helping people build skills in an environment of highly palatable foods with little incentive to exercise, so they can succeed in the long term.
David: It's not uncommon to find that people who are overweight have a number of different conditions that they're dealing with on a regular basis.
Paula: My legs were in so much pain - my knees were, going down the stairs that day at home. It was like, that day I decided it was time to make a change.
Maureen: Retrofit is not a diet. It's a permanent behavior modification. Our mission is to free that healthy person within.
Amy: That's how I think about it. That's how I think about Retrofit. It's not a program with this finite end. It's a way of life.
Scott: The retrofit program has given me permission and I certainly communicate it to my family that this is a priority so that first thing Saturday morning, if I'm going off to the gym for an hour, hour and a half, it's understood and that's what it is. So, there's a lot more support there and there's no question about, "Oh, do you really need to do it now?" It's, "We'll see you when you get back."
Amy: My husband is also on the program, and I think he's done great and he looks great. He's changed eating habits. I think he's really happy that I am on a road to sort of sustainable, good eating habits, which helps the whole family.
Dawn: The most important thing that a food and nutrition expert with Retrofit can do is meet you where you are.
Scott: One of the great strengths about the Retrofit program is how personal it is. Working with my behavior coach, it was about understanding how the Retrofit program would complement what I'm trying to do in my life. Not necessarily forcing me to change everything about my life to fit the Retrofit program.
Mia: Now that I'm looking at it from the perspective of having more energy, more self-control, more longevity, all those things, it really is empowering in the sense that I'm not doing this to look good. I'm doing this to feel good, and that's a huge paradigm shift.
Juan: My doctor was very surprised about my results, and about my weight loss with Retrofit. My doctor pointed out that the dramatic improvement in my total cholesterol was not just the result of weight loss. That was certainly a component, but more importantly it was the result of my lifestyle change.
Maureen: Losing at least 10% of body weight can significantly improve overall health, energy, mood, quality of life.
David: Quite frankly, diets don't work.
Norman: I'll go up. I'll lose weight. Go back down. Then after a while, I would creep back up. I was at the stage where I was at one of the peaks in this ebb and flow, and I heard about Retrofit.
Maureen: Dr. Kushner's profile, his lifestyle patterns inventory, enables clients to see where they're failing in their weight loss. What is preventing them from losing the weight? What is preventing them from maintaining their weight?
Matt: Retrofit works because you're given the tools and the strategies that you need to sustain a lifestyle.
Robert: When the counselor knows my unique lifestyle patterns that are problematic for me in controlling my body weight, they're able to tackle them immediately. They can work on solutions from day one to help you control your body weight.
Cathy: The data is so cool. It's such a little window into how everybody's progressing.
Whitney: The Retrofit client dashboard is unique in that it holds so many different data points and pieces of information.
Robin: I really use that data. [It's there 00:04:28] to develop goals and kind of keep them on track with their goals, and make them accountable for those goals too.
Cathy: Retrofit provides a team of experts. They provide the data and they provide the accountability. They're going to help make you a success.
Maureen: So, the Retrofit program, we have over 90% success rate, less than 5% have dropped out.
Whitney: Our client outcomes are, at the end of the day, the only thing that make us successful. It's the only thing that matters, and everyone in the company from the CEO to the development team, and everyone in between knows that. So, anything any of us can do to make a client more successful happens.
Matt: You do feel that everybody in the company is really pulling in for the client. You feel that from just the simple emails that are sent out to say, "Hey, this is what we have going on next." It's all about making the client experience wonderful and getting that individual toward their goal.
Mia: I've been on the program for 18 weeks, and I've lost about 25 pounds, which is roughly 13% of my body weight.
Paula: My rings are starting to fall off my fingers, my clothes are fitting better. It's just been all the way around. Everyday there's something new that I feel good about.
Dan: Shedding pounds is definitely helpful to me in that I just have more energy to do the things I want to do outside of work.
Robert: It turns out that 10% is just about in that right niche, where you're going to be able to see and feel the benefits, and it's practical and achievable to sustain that amount of body weight.
Dawn: When you lose 10% of your body weight, it's called "clinically significant". What that means is it decreases disease risk of so many diseases. So, you have a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer...
Brad: ...decreases in blood pressure, decreases in cholesterol...
Dawn: ...better sleep, more energy, and just feeling better.
Matt: It's been pretty amazing. I'm working with 26 people right now, and just watching them with their lives just changing. You're really seeing life changes.
Robin: I really enjoy watching people walk out that door better than when they came in it.
David: I see, through our very unique model, an opportunity to literally impact the health of thousands of people across the country.
Tucker: It's really fulfilling, seeing them lose the weight, change their behaviors, and really improve their lifestyle. They're just so much better for it.
Norman: My wife is thrilled about one other aspect, probably more than anything else, and that is that I've stopped snoring. I was a pretty loud snorer. As the weight has come off, that apparently has ceased.
Dan: Less snoring means that I'm no longer getting little elbows or kicks in the middle of the night. So, I can stay sleeping for a better period of time. It means my wife is getting better sleep herself.
Matt: Retrofit is the way weight loss should be.
Juan: Most weight loss programs focus on one of the three legs that Retrofit focuses on. So, they either focus on diet, they focus on exercise, or and to a much lesser degree, they focus on behavioral change. With Retrofit it's all three.
Matt: We can individualize things, and really make them unique to that person that comes in and says, "Okay, this is what I'm trying to do."
Jeff: Our clients get the opportunity to work with experts, to have their data captured, to have real accountability over a 12-month horizon. So, it's a very doable, livable change.
Cathy: When the data is great, when people are seeing weight loss, when they're seeing amazing changes, when they're making everything happen for themselves, we celebrate.
Whitney: When we're concerned about client progress or we just have questions, or we want to troubleshoot really ways in which to help jump start or get a client back on track, we pull the entire wellness expert team together.
Cathy: Sometimes, we just have to have a little talk. "What's going on? What are you struggling with most? Where is it that we can focus? What one thing can we work on this week to help get you over this sticking point, and get you progressing again, and get you feeling confident that you're going to succeed this time?"
Matt: Being able to collaborate with people that are like-minded and being able to work on one individual with multiple people, it really is gold. It's really nice to have that depth of knowledge and that background so accessible.
Cathy: We check in regularly. We talk, we email, we text, whatever it is the client needs to most easily communicate and make sure that they're getting the attention that they need, and the tools that they need to succeed.
Juan: The program works precisely because it's part of my everyday life. It's something that I'm going to do in any event. So, the question is, what are the choices that I'm going to make in terms of what I eat, in terms of whether or not I exercise, in terms of how much exercise I get in and what that looks like?
Melissa: The data from the wireless scale and from the activity tracker is really helpful.
Holly: But then you actually have that data going to experts, experts that know what to do with it. So, they can tell you, do you need to stay the course? Do you change something? What do you do with that data once you have it?
Mia: The data that you're sending in to the internet is being constantly evaluated.
Juan: The data has been phenomenal. The results have been phenomenal. I have not only achieved my weight loss goal, but quite frankly, more importantly, I have achieved improvements in my health, measurable improvements in my health.
Robert: The evidence shows very nicely that some of the strongest strategies for long-term weight loss and maintenance is self- monitoring and accountability. That's exactly what this technology provides.
You can self-monitor, you see what your weight is, you see what your physical activity is, you can see what your caloric intake is. You also have the benefit of the accountability by the wellness experts in order to manage your behavior, and give you feedback and support.
Dan: I think the power in Retrofit is bringing the data together with the network of experts, and collaborating to make you a healthier individual.
Amy: It's like a master's program. It's like it's just teaching me how to live my life. I feel like I have guardrails around me of people watching, and tools that I can use to sort of get me where I need to go from a health and wellness standpoint.
Mia: You have this support network of experts and people that are interested in your well-being. It's wonderful. They read your data, they give you encouragement, they cheer-lead you.
Norman: The expert team is motivating, and knowing that they're there looking over everything adds to that motivation. I want to succeed. I know they want me to succeed. I have succeeded, and I'll continue to succeed.
Whitney: This program works because you have a team of people looking at your individual lifestyle.
Cathy: Do you need the drill sergeant approach? Do you need a supportive friend? What do you need?
Whitney: We can't tell you upfront what your program is going to look like. We craft that program with you as we get to know you, through all the data we're pulling in about you, to really determine how you will be successful moving forward.
Cathy: Then we go to our team. Who best matches this person's personality, and best matches this person's needs?
Whitney: The fit between wellness expert and client is really determined and based on a personality match, likes and dislikes, preferences, and then just it's really a style fit. It's who we really think is going to bond and have a commitment, and work well together.
Jeff: This country faces a number of challenges, and one of the biggest is our healthcare epidemic, which is driven by obesity.
Matt: Retrofit fills in the blanks that a lot of programs leave to the side and don't even take into consideration a lot of times. Then, that's why they don't see as much success as we're seeing in some of our clients.
Kilby: Well this year, as part of our health insurance, we had to do a screening. I tell you, when I got my results back I was really pumped. My blood pressure was back to normal, my cholesterol was perfect, and there's still the amount of weight that I loss. So, it was a pretty good feeling.
Jeff: We partner with the physician and work in conjunction with them over the long term, to help them heal their patients.
Maureen: They understand that we have put a program together that is going to enable their patients to be 100% successful.
David: When you work with Retrofit, we come in, we take care of all the marketing. We take care of all the upfront work.
Maureen: Weight loss can be a very sticky subject to talk to certain patients about.
Holly: A lot of times, people say, "You know, it's hard. It's so hard to change behavior. It's so hard to lose weight." That may be true. It may be hard to lose weight, and it probably is hard to maintain a weight loss, but it's also hard to be overweight. It's also hard to be obese. It's also hard to have type 2 diabetes. It's hard if you die early and you leave your children and your family behind.
All those things are hard too, so I always tell people, "You have a choice. You can choose your hard, so get off the fence. Which hard do you want? You can either choose it or it can choose you."
Whitney: At the end of the day, Retrofit doesn't just impact the number on the scale. Retrofit impacts all the rest of your life. If you're taking some time for yourself, and you're focused on your activity, and you're fueling your body with good, healthy, raw, natural food, you just position yourself to be a better mom, to be a better spouse, to be a better employee, or employer for that matter.
It gives you a whole host of benefits that are squishy, fuzzy, and intangible, right? But matter almost more than the number on the scale.
Robert: Everyone needs to take charge of their own life, to understand what's getting them in trouble, and turn those around. Be a champion of success in their family, in their workplace, in their community, so that they can be a vanguard, a part of the vanguard group in order to see that you can lose weight. You can change your lifestyle patterns long-term and you can be successful.
